Theodoros Theofilogiannakos one of the high-ranked officials during the Greek military junta, notoriously known for torturing people, passed away on September 24, after losing a long battle with cancer. His funeral will take place on Saturday, September 26, in Laconia, Greece.
Theofilogiannakos was one of the last military junta officials alive, now the lone survivor is Stylianos Pattakos. He had been imprisoned after the junta trials in 1975. He was released after 18 years later, in 1992.
He used to serve as commander in the Greek Military Police from 1968 until 1970 and as governor from 1970 to 1972. He was a fanatical anticommunist, who was first arrested in late 1974 and sentenced in 1975 for offenses such as grievous bodily harm, abuse of power, inciting injuries etc.
After being released in September 1992, he made one of his last public appearances when he delivered a eulogy at the funeral of his fellow junta officer Ntertilis.
According to a book written by Dimitris Koufodinas, the Greek terrorist group 17N was considering making Theofilogiannakos a target.
Originating from Mani, Theofilogiannakos studied at the Greek Airforce School from where he was expelled. In fact, during his defense speech he claimed that he was expelled because he was nationalist and the airforce was controlled by communists.
Later, he enrolled in the Greek Army and actively participated in the coup of April 21 1967.
