Greek Authorities Reportedly Considering New Refugee and Migrant Settlement in Athens

Afghan_refugeesWhile the route of migrants and refugees hoping to reach Germany, France and other European countries further in the geographical centre and north of the continent has been well documented, new arrivals in Greece are also being left sleeping in the streets of Athens.
Thousands of migrants and refugees have camped at the Victoria Square in the Centre of Athens, according to international and Greek media reports.
The head of the International Organization for Migration’s Athens branch, Daniel Esdras said that there are over 5,000 migrants and refugees entering the Greek borders from Turkey each day, the BBC reports.
Amid this humanitarian crisis on the streets of the capital, Kathimerini newspaper reports that Greek authorities are considering housing migrants and refugees who are in the streets of Athens at the former airport in the Elliniko area, south of the city centre. The move is reportedly under examination as the original plan to construct a reception centre in an old munitions factory in the area of Lavrio was opposed.
Since the Eleftherios Venizelos airport opened in March 2001, the Elliniko airport has been abandoned and a privatisation competition was held, but the takeover deal has yet to be finalized.
A number of migrants and refugees are currently being housed in the Palio Faliro Olympic Stadium in the Palio Faliro area, close to Athens’s centre. However, individuals and families staying there will have to leave by Sunday, as the wrestling World Championships will take place at the stadium beginning on October 13.
