More than an hour prior to kick-off, Bayern Munich fans clashed with Greek riot police inside the Giorgios Karaiskakis stadium. According to Greek media reports, Bayern fans threw bottles and plastic chairs towards the Olympiakos fans. Riot police intervened and pushed back the German team’s fans using their batons. One Bayern fan was reported seriously injured and was transported away from the stands.

“There was unnecessary loutish behaviour from our fans and a disproportionate use of the baton by police,” a Bayern spokesperson said commenting on the clashes.
Olympiacos held to a draw until the 51st minute when Thomas Muller scored a goal that seems to have been intended to be a cross. The Greeks attempted the comeback with their best chance coming at the left foot of Leandro Salino who kicked the ball wide of Bayern’s left post from close range in the 83rd minute.
The Germans punished Olympiacos for the missed opportunity as Mario Goetze scored from inside the penalty box in the 89th minute. Bayern completed the victory with a penalty kick by Muller in the 92nd minute.
Olympiacos’s next Champions League game is against Arsenal in London on September 29.
