The American travel website TripAdvisor announced the winners of its annual Traveler’s Choice awards, on Tuesday, which are based on votes by its readers, and Greece placed amongst the best in many different categories.
The well-known Greek island of Santorini was chosen by TripAdvisor’s readers as the fourth best island in the world.
“Even if you’ve never been to this Cyclades island in the Aegean Sea, you’d still recognize it immediately – candy-colored houses carved into cliffs, sapphire waters, gleaming white buildings topped with half-spheres the color of a stormy sky. Here you’ll find peace as you roam the black sand beaches or the streets of a provincial village like Imerovigli. Beautiful Oia is world-famous for its sunsets, which seem tinted with every shade of an artist’s palette,” TripAdvisor writes.
The website’s readers also picked the Acropolis Museum as the 11th best museum in the world. The Acropolis itself was ranked 21st in the European landmarks category and the city of Athens was chosen as the 20th best destination in the world.
The island of Crete was ranked as the third best European island just ahead of the island of Zakynthos in the Ionian Sea, which came in fourth in the same category.
Crete further impressed the website’s users as the island’s Elafonissi beach located in the area of Chania, was picked as the 10th best beach in the world. Multiple Greek beaches were voted among the best ones in Europe. The Eggremeni Beach on the Island of Lefkada in the Ionian Sea ranked ninth, the Balos Beach and Lagoon at Crete came in 12th right in front of St. Paul’s Bay beach on the island of Lindos, which held the 13th spot.
