17-Year-Old Migrant Dead After Saturday Noon Shooting In Symi, Greece

Greek_coastguard_SimiA 17-year-old immigrant was found dead after an exchange of fire between port authority officers and traffickers in the southeastern Aegean island of Symi.
An officer and a suspected smuggler were also injured during the incident on Saturday noon.
When the GreekĀ port authorities identified a boat approaching Greek territorial waters carrying suspected undocumented immigrants, the traffickers who were armed opened fire and the officers replied.
According to locals the 17-year-immigrant was fatally wounded during the exchange of fire, while other witnesses said thatĀ he died fromĀ asphyxiation.
Symi Mayor Lefteris Papakalodoukas called for the Prosecutor’s intervention in a statement on the incident stressing out that the immigration problem on the tiny island isĀ out of control, since 500 migrants are already hosted in Symi.
