Ancient Greek Philosopher Statue Vandalized in Turkey

aristotleThe famous statue of Aristotle that greeted visitors at the ancient Greek city of Assos in Turkey had to be removed from its place, after it was vandalized. Turkish newspaper Hurriyet noted that the statue has been transferred to Izmir in order to be restored.

The unknown individuals that vandalized the statue have not been found yet, while it was reported that they managed to smash its right arm and destroy the statue’s face.

The statue of Aristotle, created by a contemporary artist, was erected at the entrance of Assos in 2009, on the initiative of the Turkish Culture Ministry. It will be returned to its former place after the restoration process is complete.

Assos used to be known as one of the leading seaports of antiquity, while it is also known as the ancient site where Aristotle had formed the first philosophy school.

After leaving the Platonic Academy in Athens, Aristotle travelled to Assos, where he was welcomed by King Hermias, and opened an Academy. He also married Pythias, Hermias’ adopted daughter.

Aristotle became the leader of a group of philosophers in the Academy of Assos, and together they made innovative observations on zoology and biology.

When the Persians attacked Assos, King Hermias was caught and sentenced to death, while Aristotle fled to Macedonia, which was ruled by his friend King Philip II of Macedon. In Macedonia, he tutored Philip’s son, Alexander the Great.
