Greek Government Makes Changes to Greece's Military Leadership

military_serviceNew Democracy’s coordinator for national defence Kostas Tasoulas claimed in an announcement he made on Thursday that the Greek government hastily made changes to the country’s military leadership.
“The Government Council for Foreign Affairs and Defence decided, without convening its members, but through signature collection without any prior notification, the change of the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff (GEETHA) and change of the Chief of the Hellenic Navy General Staff (GEN) as if this is an ongoing issue!” the announcement said and noted that this strategy shows a lack of respect towards the country’s special forces.
Although neither GEETHA nor GEN have made an official announcement, the Athens Macedonian News Agency reports that current Chief of GEN Evangelos Apostolakis will become the chief of GEETHA and Giorgos Giakoumakis was named Chief of GEN. The changes will come into effect on September 15.
