The Great Greek Summer Escape

greek-vacationGreeks will be leaving their cities for vacation over the weekend, on the occasion of the Dormition of Virgin Mary on August 15. They are expected to travel via boat, train, bus and airplane, with occupancy levels reaching 80% to 100%.
From Friday morning until midnight on August 15, a total of 78 ships, with occupancy exceeding 80% and 90% in all cases, will be leaving from ports near the Greek capital. 48 ferries will leave from the port of Piraeus to various Greek islands over the next two days. Another 20 will leave from the port of Rafina, while traffic is also expected to increase at the port of Lavrio, where 10 ships have been scheduled to depart for various Aegean islands.
Furthermore, occupancy levels reached 100% in many buses departing on Friday or Saturday from Athens to holiday destinations across the country. Some destinations even showed a 30% increase in demand, therefore, both Athenian bus stations (in Kifissos and Liosia) had to add more routes in order to service their customers.
Even more people will be travelling by plane. It was reported that between August 14 and 17 a total of 2,221 flights have been scheduled to take off from Athens International Airport, showing a 16% increase compared to the same period last year. 552 flights have been scheduled on August 14, 553 on August 15, 554 on August 16 and 562 for August 17. The most popular foreign destinations for people travelling by airplane are Madrid and Dubai, while Samos is the most popular domestic destination for this summer.
