Greek Parliament to Vote Bailout Deal in Marathon Session

590_1235838851903f62b077217399eb5a41The Greek Parliament’s Conference of Speakers decided to open the Parliament to discuss and vote the draft omnibus bill with the agreement reached between Greece and international creditors.
It was the first time the Conference of Speakers convened publicly and the session was broadcast on the Parliament TV channel. Parliament vice president and Greek Communist Party (KKE) MP Giorgos Lamproulis voted against the parliament opening on the grounds he did not want to vote on the bailout agreement.
The Conference of Speakers unanimously decided – after the recommendation of the Parliament President – that their meetings will be public from now on.
Parliament President Zoe Konstantopoulou stated that she voted for the parliament opening but she is against the fast-track procedure of the vote on such a critical issue as the loan agreement.
The debate on the bill will begin at 9:30 am in the pertinent Parliament Committees and then – after the Conference of Speakers meets again and decides the agenda – the process of debate in the plenary will begin. The government has requested that the debate and voting should be conducted under the “urgent procedure” regulation.
During the Conference, several Speakers criticized Konstantopoulou for delaying the session and the parliament opening by sticking to formalities that are not important when such a serious issue is going to a vote.
Konstantopoulou claimed, “I have the responsibility to notify all members of the Parliament and it would have been inappropriate to open the Parliament and convene without ensuring first that all [lawmakers] can attend.”
