Belgian Composer Wim Mertens Inspired by Ancient Greek City

wim-mertensFamous Belgian composer, pianist, guitarist and musicologist Wim Mertens announced that he intends to write a new musical piece about the ancient Greek city of Nicopolis, which inspired him during his concert at the monument last August.

In a related announcement, the municipality of Preveza stressed that this new development is a vindication of the regional unit’s efforts to showcase the archaeological sites in the area through cultural events.

Stratos Ioannou, who is responsible for tourism development in Epirus, noted: “Wim Mertens’ concert in the monument last August was a significant cultural event that attracted public attention. The internationally renowned composer recognized the beauty and inspirational power of Nicopolis and decided to compose a piece inspired by the monument. This announcement made us very happy and gave us momentum to continue our efforts to showcase our great ancient monuments. We are available to offer any assistance to the artist for this important project that will help people in Europe and across the world become familiar with our region.”

Meanwhile, popular French band Nouvelle Vague will perform at the same enchanting space on August 15, establishing this archaeological site as the birthplace of many modern cultural events.
