Panathinaikos F.C. will not be hearing the famous UEFA Champions League anthem this year either.
During the second leg of the 2015-2016 UEFA Champions League third qualifying round, the Athenian team was unable to capitalize on their first leg 2-1 victory over Club Brugge in Athens and lost 3-0 to the Belgians in Bruges. Club Brugge scored all three goals in the second half to secure their place in the playoff round.
Panathinaikos has not played in Europe’s top soccer competition since the 2008-2009 season.
However, their European season is not over. Panathinaikos will play in the Europa League playoff round for a chance to participate in that competition this season. The Greek team will know their opponents on Friday when the draw takes place.
