Greek Under-18 Basketball Team Wins European Championship

fiesta-1The Greek Under-18 basketball team beat Turkey after lagging 14 points behind and won the European Championship on Sunday evening in Volos.
Greece’s national team used the home advantage and came from behind to finally win the game and become the new European champion, defeating Turkey 64-61.
Turkey took control from the start of the game and established a steady lead. The point difference went as high as 14 points but the Greeks managed to trim that down and take the lead 54-51, four minutes before the end.
Vassilis Charalambopoulos was the game MVP, with Giorgos Papagiannis and Dionysis Skoulidas having a great game as well. Both teams appeared nervous and could not translate ball possession into points for the most part.
Coach Ilias Papatheodorou’s boys had made it to the finals after beating France in the quarterfinals and Lithuania in the semifinals. Greece’s previous Under-18 basketball European Championship was in 2008.
