Greek Municipality Union Sends Distress Signal to Ministry of Economy

The Central Union of Municipalities and Communities of Greece (KEDE) has alerted the Greek Economy Minister, Giorgos Stathakis on the stoppages of ongoing construction in Greek municipalities.
According to a KEDE press release, KEDE president George Patoulis informed Stathakis that National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA) directed funds are not being provided from the Program for Public Investment to Greek municipalities, as had been agreed. ESPA is a framework that dictates how structural funds that are given by the European Union to member countries will be spent.
The KEDE announcement reports that due to lack of 2007-2013 NSRF funds, 387 construction activities have halted in 113 municipalities, which account for one third of all municipalities in Greece, effectively cancelling the agreed budget of 600 million euros.
At the present time, 1.2 billion euros worth of construction in Greek municipalities across Greece has stopped.
The press release notes that individual municipalities are being called to cover the costs of this cancellation to the firms that have undertaken these constructions.
Patoulis also pointed out to Stathakis that as result of these stoppages, the repayment of  municipalities to construction companies must be extended with the current deadline being December 31, 2016.
