Unemployment in Greece dropped to 25.6% in April 2015, a slight improvement compared to the 25.8% rate in March. The number of unemployed Greek citizens amounted to 1,216,870, mainly young people (53.2%) and in the most productive age group of 25-34 (32.9%).
According to the monthly Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) survey on Greek workforce, the number of unemployed citizens decreased by 78,759 people compared to April 2014 (down 6.1%) and 11,848 compared to March 2015 (down 1%).
The number of employed citizens was estimated at 3,543,651, increasing by 49,283 people compared to April 2014 (up 1.4%) and 16,834 compared to March 2015 (up 0.5%).
Meanwhile, the survey found that 3,334,628 Greek citizens are currently financially inactive, meaning that they are neither working nor looking for work. This number decreased by 21,089 people compared to April 2014 (0.6%) and 9,103 compared to March 2015 (0.3%).
In regards to women, the unemployment rate stood at 29.8% in April 2015, a significant increase compared to last April (24.2%). According to ELSTAT, the rate is still much higher than the one recorded for men (22.2% in 2015 from 24.2% in 2014).
Despite the overall decrease due to the fact that the country’s economy stabilized last year, it still remains more than double the Eurozone average of 11.1% in April. Greece’s economy contracted by 0.2% in the first quarter, dipping back into recession after a fragile recovery last year.
