100 German MPs Gathering Signatures for Grexit

bundestag708_1More than 100 members of German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s political party are gathering signatures in an attempt to oppose their leader, in case she brings a third bailout program to Bundestag.
According to the Times, there is an ongoing rebellion in the ranks of the Christian Democratic Party, an event that analysts, as well as Angela Merkel had expected. This might not come as a shock, but the number of Members who are opposed to an agreement will definitely make the party’s internal affairs more difficult.
The article states that this development does not allow the German Chancellor to defuse her stance towards Greece and it certainly ties her hands on the possibility of Germany accepting a Greek debt haircut – the Greek side’s long-standing demand.
There is no way to estimate the exact number of MPs who are against Merkel’s plan for an agreement with Greece, but analysts believe that they are the same 100 parliamentarians who opposed the Greek program last February. Much time has passed since then and a lot has happened, that led to a change in the German public’s stance against Greece.
At the moment, Bundestag is closed for the summer break and a special meeting will be arranged in order to vote on Greece’s new support package. Analysts noted that Merkel will only be able to know the exact number of MPs who are against her plans during the special meeting.
