Nia Vardalos Supports ‘Hard-Working, Loving People’ of Greece

The star of “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” Nia Vardalos has voiced her support on social media of the “hard-working, loving people” of Greece who she says should not be blamed for the economic crisis.

Plenty of media outlets have helped contribute to an idea of Greeks as lazy and having caused their own financial collapse, but Vardalos says this is simply not true. She “would have hoped society wouldn’t simply swallow the jaded media’s typical dissemination of false information.”

“Please don’t judge a country’s people based on the actions of a government,” the Greek-American star also tweeted.

Many celebrities, both with and without Greek roots, have recently come out in support of Greece and its people, and against the treatment of Greece by the euro zone. Director Oliver Stone also came out in support of the newly elected Greek government Syriza by publicly supporting the new party’s stance on negotiations and saying “Viva Tsipras; Viva a New Greece”.

Vardalos can’t believe how quickly the public would change their image of Greece based on the misrepresentations of just a few media outlets, and wants to remind the world how wonderful the people of her homeland are.

Her most moving tweet in support of troubled Greeks affected by the crisis was the following: “Greece is a beautiful nation of hard-working, loving people who would invite you into their home and even give you their bed.”

The actress just wrapped production on the sequel to “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” in Toronto. We hope she as well as other celebrities keep voicing and spreading their support for Greeks in this troubled time.
