Greek Solidarity Rallies Across Europe Before July 5 Referendum

greece-protestsSolidarity rallies have been scheduled to take place over the last couple of days in cities across Europe, in order for people to show their support toward Greece in light of the July 5 referendum. On Sunday, Greeks are called to vote “Yes” or “No” to the harsh bailout program proposal submitted on June 25 by the country’s creditors.

Rallies took place in Berlin, Bremen, Vienna, Salzburg and Brussels.

Over the last few days, since Greece’s previous bailout program ended on June 30, thousands of protesters have taken to the streets in the UK, France, Italy, Germany, the Netherlands and Germany, showing their support toward Greece and calling on the country’s creditors to reach an agreement.british museum

After Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras announced the referendum late on Friday, June 26, banks were closed while the government had to enforce capital controls. Furthermore, the creditors’ decision not to expand Greece’s bailout program resulted in the country’s inability to pay the latest IMF loan installment of 1.6 billion euros.

After failing to pay the IMF, Greece became the first developed country to default on its international obligations.
