Venezuelan President Maduro Expresses Solidarity Toward Greece

Maduro
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro issued a statement expressing solidarity toward the Greek people and Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras after Greece decided to default on the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
“I would like to officially express solidarity toward Prime Minister Tsipras and the Greek people on behalf of Venezuela,” Maduro stated during his weekly televised address.
Maduro’s statement followed Greece’s decision to become the first “developed economy” to default on an IMF loan, after missing a 1.53-billion-euro payment due on June 30.
The Greek government will hold a referendum on Sunday to determine whether its citizens approve an agreement with terms set by creditors.
“The Greek people have known about democracy for over 2000 years and the Greek people are going to respond with democracy,” Maduro stated, according to a telesurtv.net report. The Venezuelan leader went on to encourage the Greek government to abandon the austerity program proposed by its international creditors.
The Venezuelan President also stressed Latin America’s progress in economic growth through the creation of institutions such as “PetroCaribe, which have facilitated social, economic stability, shared progress and solidarity,” according to the report.
