Greeks Abroad Facing Problems Due to Capital Controls

greeks-abroadThe Greek government’s decision for the closure of banks across the country has brought on an absolute paralysis. Apart from the many issues that Greek citizens face in their daily lives, Greeks who are currently abroad — students, businessmen travelling for work, or people on their holidays — are also facing huge problems.
After several successive meetings with the relevant ministries the Greek Foreign Ministry, on the instructions of Minister Nikos Kotzias announced that it would provide assistance to Greek citizens who are abroad and address practical issues arising since the bank closed and the capital controls were imposed.
Specifically in regards Greek students studying abroad and Greek patients who are hospitalized in foreign countries, the Ministry provides that all their requests will be submitted to the commission for the approval of banking transactions.
Regarding Greek tourists who are currently abroad, the Greek Finance Ministry has found a solution, so that credit cards issued by Greek banks can be used in order for holders to meet their needs in accordance with the limit which will be set by the Bank Association.
Finally, in regards to pensions, the General Secretariat for Greeks Abroad is processing a specific arrangement to restore the smooth flow of pensions to Greek people living abroad.
