Greece to Reopen Bank Branches to Cater for Pensioners

20150629_103431The Greek government in collaboration with the Hellenic Bank Association have decided to reopen about 1,000 bank branches on Wednesday that will cater for pensioners who do not use or possess debit cards.
Greece’s Finance Ministry announced on Tuesday that the branches will be open until the end of the week and will service only those pensioners who cannot withdraw money from automated teller machines. Pensioners will be allowed to withdraw up to 120 euros from their pension until the end of the week.
Banks will remain closed until Monday, July 6. However, the Greek government cannot confirm that banks will open again on Tuesday, July 7. On Sunday, July 5, Greeks are called to vote on a referendum whether they want to sign a new bailout deal or not. The referendum was decided after Athens rejected the proposed deal as recessionary.
The Greek government has imposed capital controls in order to prevent the collapse of the banking system after several days of bank runs that followed the breakdown of negotiations between Greece and its international creditors. Greek citizens are allowed to withdraw up to 60 euros per day from their accounts.
The Greek Finance Ministry reiterated assurances that bank deposits will remain safe after Sunday’s referendum.
