Around 240 Illegal Migrants Found in the Aegean

hellenic-coast-guardThe Hellenic Coast Guard rescued 237 illegal migrants in seven separate incidents that occurred in the Aegean Sea, Greece over the last 24 hours. The location and rescue operation were conducted off the coast of three Greek islands located in the eastern Aegean, Chios, Lesvos and Kos.
At the moment authorities have not yet released any more information.
Meanwhile, To Potami MPs Nikos Orfanos and Iasonas Fotilas submitted their questions to the Greek Finance, Infrastructure, Shipping and Tourism Minister George Stathakis regarding the issue of the migrants’ transfer from the islands. The two MPs asked what measures the ministry intends to take in order for the migrants to be moved to the mainland.
Amid the tourist season peak, the illegal migrants were granted the necessary documents, but the ferries were not able to carry out the task of transferring the migrants, since every day they are overwhelmed by the increased passenger traffic.
The Greek MPs also asked the minister to address the issue of managing the increased migration flows in the eastern Aegean and the Dodecanese, where 90% of the incoming migrants and refugees are currently settling.
