Gov't Spokesman: 'It Is Positive that Juncker Differentiated Himself from These Proposals'

gavriil-sakellaridisThe document which was submitted officially by the institutions to Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras last Wednesday included a VAT increase in electricity and medicines, a cut in supplementary pensions and an increase in revenues from VAT, the government spokesman Gavriil Gavriilidis said on Tuesday, in response to a comment made earlier by European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.
“The document submitted officially by the institutions to the Greek prime minister last Wednesday included a 10% raise in VAT for electricity, a 4.5% VAT increase in medicines, abolition of supplementary pensions, an increase in VAT revenues by 1.8 billion euros and a cut in pension costs by 1.8 billion euros,” Gavriil Sakellaridis said.
Sakellaridis noted that the government “never said this was a proposal from the Commission or from Juncker personally, but that it is a combined proposal from all three institutions.” He continued to say that it is positive that Juncker “differentiated himself from these proposals.”
The spokesman said that the government has submitted proposals which include equivalent measures “which completely cover the funding gap and transfer burdens away from the weaker social classes,” adding that it has also proposed cutting defense spending.
