Dimitris Avramopoulos

European Commissioner for Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Dimitris Avramopoulos on Thursday had a meeting with United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki Moon, presenting the European Commission’s proposal for the relocation of refugees from third countries within the EU.

Avramopoulos underlined the European Commission’s excellent cooperation with the UN on migration and security issues and said this cooperation will be reinforced further in the framework of actions included in the new European Agenda for Migration.

Migration is a global challenge and needs a global approach, Avramopoulos stressed and underlined the definitive role of the UN High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) in the implementation of the European program for the relocation of refugees from third countries toward the EU, which was announced on Wednesday and received the support of the UN secretary general.

Avramopoulos underlined that the illegal trafficking in migrants must be dealt with immediately and effectively and that cooperation with the origin and transit countries was crucial.
