BBC Video On Greek Efforts To Rescue Migrants In Mediterranean Sea

Rescue Migrants
Earlier today, BBC’s international correspondent Murad Shishani presented a video capturing the agonizing daily efforts of the Greek coastguards to rescue migrants crossing the Mediterranean Sea in search of a better life for themselves and their families.
The video shows a small but crowded migrants’ boat coming from the Turkish coast to Greece. At first, the journalist suspects that the boat passengers are of Syrian origin and he tries to communicate with them in order to confirm their identity.
After ten minutes of negotiations and exhortations, migrants agree to ashore delivering women and children first. Both Murad Shishani and a Greek coastguard speak of the emotionally intriguing restlessness and despair that is mirrored in their faces.
The video closes with brief interviews of people talking about the unknown reasons that led them to the decision to travel by boat in the Mediterranean as well as their plans for the future.
According to the Greek government, over 18,000 migrants have approached Greek shores this year. A great number of migrants reach the small island of Leros nearly on a daily basis.
