The occupation of the National Kapodistrian University of Athens rectorate building ended today as police entered the premises and arrested the anarchists.
The police operation started at 6:00 am on Friday with the collaboration of the fire department and a prosecutor. Policemen had surrounded the building and initially asked the anarchists to exit the building peacefully. When they refused, policemen tried to enter through the main gate but were unsuccessful.
Then firemen set up a ladder to the side of the building and secured an entry point. About 15 policemen entered through the second floor, located the anarchists and arrested them without any resistance. By 7:20 am the evacuation operation had ended with police arresting 14 people — seven male and seven female — who had occupied the building.
After the university building was evacuated, the vice rector and several university officials entered the premises to inspect for damages, vandalism and looting. The university officials did not report any damages after the inspection.
After the evacuation, about 20 people gathered outside the university building and shouted slogans in support of the arrested anarchists.
The occupation of the university rectorate building ended after 17 days. The anarchists occupied the building to protest against maximum security prisons and demanded the release of imprisoned terrorists.
