5.5-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Cyprus

earthquakeA strong 5.5-magnitude earthquake shook Cyprus at 11:25 am (local time). The high-intensity tremor, followed by continuous aftershocks, was felt across the island. The earthquake epicenter was located in the sea area 18 km southwest of Paphos (112 km southwest of Nicosia) and the focal depth was 10 km.
The earthquake caused panic to those residing in higher buildings. Cypriot authorities are currently gathering information from the province, however, so far there has been no indication of any damage or injuries.
According to local seismologists, people in Cyprus believed at first that the earthquake duration was very long, however, it was revealed that a very strong aftershock took place just after the main tremor.
Furthermore, the Cypriot mobile networks were overloaded, therefore residents were not able to place any calls for a short period of time. After 12 pm the networks were gradually restored and the city of Paphos returned to its normal routine.
Seismologists believe that the number of aftershocks that took place after the main earthquake, helped calm the tremors in a short period of time.
