Greek FinMin Yanis Varoufakis to Meet US President Obama on Thursday

Greece’s outspoken Finance Minister Yanis Varoufakis is expected to meet with United States President Barack Obama on Thursday, his ministry said.

The Greek Finance Minister is currently in Washington participating in the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Varoufakis is expected to visit the White House on Thursday to attend celebrations for the March 25 Greek Independence Day celebrations, becoming the first official of the newly elected Greek government to have a meeting with the US President. According to unnamed Greek government sources, Varoufakis will have the chance to talk with Obama and US Vice President Joe Biden, amid crucial negotiations between Greece and its international creditors.

The Greek Finance Minister is also expected to have a meeting with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi who will also be in Washington.

During his visit to the US capital, Varoufakis will speak at the Brookings Institution on “The Greek economy and its global partners.” The Greek Finance Minister’s presentation will be preceded by an interview with German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble entitled “Eurozone at a crossroads (again).” Along with Varoufakis, the Spring Meetings will also be attended by Greece’s former Finance Minister and current Bank of Greece (BoG) governor Giannis Stournaras.
