Greek Police discovered photographs depicting minors being sexually abused on a website maintained by a 35-year old and a 27-year old, who were arrested yesterday in Athens and Piraeus respectively, facing accusations of child pornography distribution. The operation was undertaken by the Greek Electronic Crime Unit with the participation of Europol and the FBI.

The investigation began after Europol informed Greek authorities about the two men, a doctor and a former police officer trainee, who was dropped by the police academy due to similar allegations. Moreover, Europol, in cooperation with the FBI, conducted a targeted operation on a website based abroad, which included child abuse material.

The two Greeks’ involvement was revealed after the investigation that lead the Electronic Crime Unit to the identification of their electronic traces, based on the two personal accounts they created at the website.

A file was formed against the two men who were later led to the prosecutor. The possible involvement of other Greek nationals is also being investigated.
