Greek Defense Minister: We Cannot Keep ISIS Out if EU Keeps Bullying Us

In the weak of Greek officials’ warning to Brussels yesterday that “consistent” attempts by various European officials and media to spread division among the SYRIZA-led coalition government, formed with the participation of right wing Independent Greeks (ANEL), may lead to a destabilization that could leave Athens unable to properly control its borders, Greek Defense Minister Panos Kammenos has once again stated.

As the leader of Greece’s junior coalition partner said in an interview to the British Times, “this gross meddling into [Greek] domestic affairs is not just unheard of by European standards but it is unethical and dangerous. If Greece goes, then a lot more than financial stability and the euro are at stake.” As he explained, a destabilized Greece would be unable to control the “waves of undocumented migrants, including radical elements, that will come through Turkey,” referring to ISIS terrorists or other jihadists who may manage to sneak in, trying to reach Europe.

Kammenos’ latest comments caused the fierce reaction of Greek opposition parties such as “To Potami,” as well as government members. SYRIZA MEP Dimitris Papadimoulis tweeted that when Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras and the government’s economic levels are negotiating with the creditors, such statements do not help.

It should be noted that on March, Kammenos threatened Europe that Greece would suspend the European Union treaties (such as the so-called “Dublin II”) and grant all the economic migrants currently in its territory the necessary papers to travel to other European member-states, or go “straight to Berlin.” The Greek government sharply denounced the Defense Minister’s comments, while Migration Minister Tasia Christodoulopoulou distanced leftist SYRIZA from such statements and explained that it is not in the government’s intention to use asylum applicants as a negotiation tool.
