E! News TV Host Maria Menounos has been named global ambassador for the Special Olympics. Her duties will include working on a celebrity engagement campaign for the upcoming games.

Menounos will also serve as a co-captain for the Special Olympics Unified Relay Across America on May 26. The relay will take place from May 26 to July 10 across all 50 states. Over 20,000 participants will run, walk or bike over almost 21,000 miles, starting their individual journeys in Augusta, Maine, Miami, Florida and Washington, DC, and ending up in Los Angeles.

The ambassadors promote acceptance and respect for people with intellectual disabilities.

As Menounos herself stated, “Fitness and sports are a vital part of my life and I find inspiration in the determination and spirit of the athletes of Special Olympics and I want the world to know that people with intellectual disabilities need to be included and respected in our society.”

The 2015 Special Olympics World Games will be held in Los Angeles from July 25 to August 2 and over 7,000 athletes will compete.
