Greek Student's Funeral Takes Place in Crete – Death Ruled a Suicide

giakoumakis-funeral708-2Numerous people solemnly attended Vangelis Giakoumakis’ funeral which took place today, March 17 at noon. The unfortunate young man will be buried in his father’s village, Selli in Crete.
The young student’s body arrived in Selli this morning, while the family’s relatives, friends, and acquaintances arrived at the house and later the church to pay their respects.
Vangelis Giakoumakis went missing on February 6. For more than a month his family had been searching for their son while the student’s shocking and horrifying story slowly came to light. Vangelis had been bullied by his fellow students at the Dairy School in Ioannina, some of who also originated from Crete. After a long investigation, his body was discovered in a creek only 800 meters from the School.
According to Greek police, after the coroner performed an autopsy on the young man’s body he ruled his death a suicide. “Only one antemortem injury (knife cut) was found on his right wrist. Apart from this, there was no other antemortem injury, while the postmortem injuries on the face and chest were caused by animals,” noted the coroner’s report. Furthermore, the time of death lines up with the time of his disappearance.
Greek police are worried that after the student’s death was ruled a suicide the family will not be able to press charges against those responsible, since Greek law provide that a third party may be charged with participating in a suicide only if there is evidence of “intent to convince the victim to commit suicide through violence, coercion or persuasion.”
