A night dedicated to Byzantine Art was hosted in Ottawa, on February 20, 2015, at the residence of His Excellency Ambassador of Greece George Markantonatos and Vassiliki Tsirou-Markantonatou with the support of the Hellenic Community of Ottawa.

BART: Byzantine Arts Today revealed the talents of world-class artist Dr. George Kordis who is renowned for his use of the Byzantine mode of painting in conjunction with contemporary artistic trends. Kordis studied theology at the University of Athens, Greece. He later pursued his studies in theology and the aesthetics of Byzantine painting at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology in Boston, obtaining an MA in Theology.

The Embassy of Greece offered a rare glimpse of Byzantine Art Today in support of BART: The North American Centre of Byzantine Arts. Never before seen in Canada, BART founders, Dr. George Kordis and Lesia Maruschak, presented an art exhibition revealing the Byzantine mode of painting and art performance using digital technology. This was the first performance of its kind for Kordis.

Dr. Kordis and Lesia Maruschak, the founders of BART, will launch the inaugural program in August 2015 and call Ottawa home. This fundraising reception was in support of BART’s goal of obtaining a one-of-a-kind bookbinding machine from Athens for its course offering in this area.

BART is a Canadian non-profit organization founded by Kordis and Maruschak, with a mandate to advance byzantine arts education. With the launch of its summer program in the August, 2015 BART will unveil a series of educational offerings ranging from the ancient egg tempera technique to book binding. Instruction by world-renowned artists and educators will result in what is thought to be the first of its kind education institution focusing on byzantine arts in North America. Visit BART to find out more.
