lonsdale-street-festivalLonsdale Street Festival 2015, organized by the Greek Community of Melbourne, was launched on Thursday, February 12, in the presence of city councilors Beverley Pinder-Mortimer and Ken Ong, as well as the Consul General of Greece in Melbourne, Christina Simantirakis.

The festival has been scheduled to take place this weekend, February 14 and 15, in the historic Greek area in downtown Melbourne, at the corner of Lonsdale and Russell Street. According to the organizing committee, more than 100,000 people are expected to turn up at the event.

Guests were welcomed by the Community’s Greek Centre of Contemporary Culture director Jorge Menidis, who spoke about the festival’s history and its contribution in promoting Greek culture and the Greek district in downtown Melbourne.

Pinder-Mortimer spoke about the presence of Greeks in Melbourne, the Melbourne City Hall efforts in collaboration with the state government for the Greek district’s development, while she also congratulated the Greek community for its efforts to maintain and promote their culture and traditions.

Lonsdale Street Festival has been part of Melbourne’s city life for 25 years. “Melbourne and its people have shown great love for Greek culture and we are once again pleased to bring the best of Greece to the heart of the city for another year. A highlight among the range of activities across the two days will be the Saturday night performance by Dimitris Basis and Zoi Papadopoulou,” said Menidis.
