Michael Angelakos, lead singer of indie band Passion Pit, opened up about his struggles with bipolar disorder in a new PSA.

Angelakos was diagnosed with bipolar disorder when he was 18 and has sought treatment several times. In 2012, the singer had to cancel tour dates in order to work on improving his mental health.

The PSA is part of the #StrongerThanStigma campaign, a product of the collaboration between two well-known mental health foundations, Bring Change 2 Mind and Project 375. The campaign is meant to encourage people suffering from mental disorder to speak up and seek help in order to improve their quality of life.

In the video, Angelakos stated that “Once [he] started really just accepting [his] mental condition, it stung for a little bit and then everything improved.” He believes that accepting bipolar disorder and learning to deal with it, instead of fearing it or living in denial, are the best ways to cope with it.

The singer was sure to add that having bipolar disorder “is something you have to work on your entire life.”

Angelakos seems to be coping very well, as in the past few years he released several albums, two of which are full length LPs, and got married. Passion Pit fans should keep an eye on the band in 2015, as Angelakos recently released a demo on SoundCloud of a song called “Somewhere” and has been dropping hints of a soon to be released full length Passion Pit album.
