Greek-Australian Journalist Receives Walkley Award

mario-christodoulou708 Greek-Australian journalist, Mario Christodoulou, received this year’s Gold Walkey Award, along with Australian journalists Deb Masters and Fairfax Media’s Adele Ferguson. The Gold Walkey Awards is the most prestigious award for Australian journalism and the recipients are chosen by the Walkley Advisory Board from the winners of all the other categories.

Mario Christodoulou works in Australia’s ABC channel along with Deb Masters. The two journalists collaborated with Adele Ferguson from Fairfax media in order to make a series of episodes for ABC’s show Four Corners where they investigated the Commonwealth Bank.

The program entitled “Banking Bad” examined the “profit at all costs” policy adopted by Commonwealth Bank against its poor customers. After the show aired, the bank was forced to offer compensation to all the victims, while it also issued a public statement of apology.

“Financial stories aren’t traditionally photogenic, but the team has elevated business journalism by capturing the human side and through dogged investigation,” said the award judges in regards to Banking Bad.

When he received the award Mario Christodoulou thanked his family and the Four Corner’s executive producers Sue Spencer who recently announced that she would be leaving the show.

Christodoulou continues to do investigation work for ABC’s weekly Four Corners show.
