Athens Supporting Greeks of Mariupol

gerontopoulosGreek Deputy Foreign Minister Kyriakos Gerontopoulos responded immediately to the Greek community of Mariupol‘s request for financial support of the local Medical Center “Hippocrates.” More than 100,000 Greek Diaspora members are currently living in war-hit Ukraine and medical care availability is of great importance.

According to the Greek Foreign Ministry, Gerontopoulos approved the sum of 30,000 euros per semester in order to meet the Medical Center’s needs. The amount will be sent to the Federation of Greek Associations of Ukraine President, Alexandra Prochenko-Pitsatzi.

The Medical Diagnostic Center of Mariupol was built during Andrew Athens’ presidency of the World Council of Hellenes Abroad (SAE) and has served the region’s Greek Diaspora members.

Meanwhile, in a letter to Gerontopoulos, Prochenko-Pitsatzi expressed the gratitude of Greeks in Ukraine for the financial assistance that has already been sent to the Federation and the Greek communities of Ukraine, while she also expressed her hope for the Medical Center of Mariupol Mobile Unit’s “rebirth.”

Furthermore, it was noted that the Greek Foreign Ministry has received 284 applications for the conferral of Greek citizenship to Greek Diaspora members in Ukraine. It is a very small number considering that at least 100,000 citizens in Ukraine have Greek origins. Nevertheless, the Greek Foreign Ministry has already issued instructions for the immediate response to the applications.
