Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew welcomed the United States Vice President Joe Biden to the Ecumenical Patriarchate on Sunday, November 23. The closed-door meeting with Bartholomew lasted 40 minutes.

This is the second official visit of the US Vice President to the Phanar, following his first visit which took place on December 3, 2011. The visit to the Patriarchate in Phanar was part of the US Vice President’s trip to Morocco, Ukraine, and Turkey during the week of November 17th, 2014.

In Turkey, the Vice President met with President Erdogan, Prime Minister Davutoglu, and other non-governmental representatives.

Biden’s visit to Turkey focused on improving relations on regional peace and security with ISIS defeat being on top of the agenda.

“We discussed with President Erdoğan what the coalition can do to defeat ISIS [the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham], and we need Turkey’s support. I think Turkey believes that they need us as well,” Biden said.

Referring to the Cyprus issue, Biden underlined that “if there is political will, there is a potential for a solution that would be beneficial for both Cypriots and people in the wider region.”
