The Greek edition of Huffington Post was officially launched on Thursday at the Acropolis Museum, with the presence of its President and Editor-in-Chief, Arianna Huffington, who expressed her joy for opening this new page in the already long history of Huffington Post, as Greece is her motherland.
According to 24MEDIA’s news statement, the Greek edition of Huff Post is opening a new window of international news broadcasting and Greek news reporting, as the latest version of the Pulitzer Prize-winning source of breaking news and entertainment.
It was created with the cooperation of Marianna Latsis, Petros Pappas, Eugenia Chandris and Dimitris Maris. 24MEDIA, the largest digital media publisher in Greece, is the media partner to which America On Line (AOL) has trusted this pioneering project in the country.
In a joint statement, the factors of this business effort noted that “we believe that the digital economy is now – and will be even more in the future – one of the major pillars of the development of the economy and entrepreneurial initiatives in Greece. We wish to actively support investments toward that direction and without a doubt, Huffington Post Greece is an excellent example of an innovative business venture and proof of the extroversion our country should have in the future.”
Huffington Post Greece is the third international edition to be announced in the past month, with Huffington Post India slated to debut in November 2014 and Huffington Post Arabic in January 2015, thus covering 14 countries.
Huffington Post Greece leverages the reach of a truly unique and highly innovative global media brand, daily embedding and exporting Greek news reports to the world, thus combining news updates with posts of readers’ thoughts and opinions with impartiality at the core.
With the formal launch of Ηuffington Post Greece imminent, 24MEDIA has announced the Executive Editorial Team:
Sophia Papaioannou is appointed as Editorial Director. A highly respected journalist, currently presenting the weekly show “360 degrees” on ALPHA TV, she has studied journalism in NYU and has also worked as an editor-in-chief and co-host of popular investigative journalism TV shows for 13 years. Papaioannou has traveled around the world, securing exclusive interviews on major issues of Greek interest. She published her book “Hidden in the Aegean” in 2011.
Nikos Agouros, who was Managing Editor of the premium monthly magazine VIMAmen until recently, will be Εditor-in-Chief, and Pavlos Tsimas, a renowned political journalist with a 35-year career in print and broadcast media, is appointed as Contributing Editor.
The Huffington Post is a combination of a platform where people both known and unknown with something interesting to say, can say it, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalistic enterprise with investigative reporters across the globe. Huffington Post Greece will produce original reported stories, curate the best of the internet, and connect readers to great sources from around the web. The Executive Team will focus on investigative field journalism and will initially work with a team of 20 journalists that will produce original news content in different forms (reportage, videos, opinions, blogs etc), according to the specifications that have made Huffington Post an example of digital information. In her welcoming post, Papaioannou underlined that the new portal’s goal is not just to provide readers with breaking news. “We intend to relentlessly follow the day’s big issues, analyze events with fresh eyes, courage and humor too. In short, we are striving to discover new people and ideas, new standards and sights.”
During the official launch of the Greek edition of Huffington Post, members of an organization called “Assembly of Mass Media Employees, Unemployed and Students” peacefully entered the event’s lounge and handed out leaflets regarding the electronic journalists’ rights violation in Greece, while they also displayed a banner on which the following message was written: “Workers in sites/portals: We’re not slaves, we demand professional wages and full labour rights. Assembly of Media Workers: katalipsiesiea.blogspot.com”
