Greek Education Ministry to Fill 3,000 Vacant Positions in Elementary and High Schools

Teachers on childcare leave will be called by the Greek Education Ministry to express their interest in filling vacant positions in elementary and high schools, it was announced. As Education Minister Andreas Loverdos explained, the teachers who are currently on childcare leave are approximately 3,000.

The Ministry’s proposal is in regard to teachers who want to temporary cover their colleagues’ vacant positions while on childcare leave for a 300-euro benefit, granted by the Labor Ministry. Addressing journalists at a press conference, Loverdos said that the accurate number of these positions is still unknown, due to the creation of additional vacancies after the beginning of the current school year in mid September. “We do not care about political criticism; irony does not bother us. What we care about is filling those vacancies. It is pretty cynical to say that I do not have the money to get teachers if this statement is not followed by an effort to cover shortages,” the Education Minister underlined.

The proposed solution regarding the coverage of the teachers’ vacant positions caused the Greek Communist Party’s (KKE) fierce response. KKE characterized Loverdos’ proposal as “provocative and dangerous,” as it is essentially exploiting the “dire financial situation faced by young teachers and their families, using a 300-euro bait to cast the institution of parental leave into doubt.” Furthermore, KKE highlighted that the proposal should be turned down, as the only solution to cover vacancies is hiring new teachers from those who are currently working and being paid on an hourly basis.
