On the sidelines of the tripartite Summit that took place in Cairo, Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras met with representatives of the Greek community of Egypt.

“You, the Greeks of Egypt, represent the living continuity of Hellenism,” Samaras said to the representatives of the Greek community, the Patriarchate of Alexandria and the Holy Church of Sina, as well as many Greek entrepreneurs. “We are very proud of you,” he added and said that he is personally very proud of the fact that his own mother is of Greek-Egyptian descent from the city of Alexandria.

He further mentioned that Greek exports to Egypt have quadrupled in recent years and characterized this as a “triumph” of all Greek entrepreneurs who are active in the Egyptian market. He mentioned that the export goal set by Greece is to reach 1 billion euros this year alone.

The Greeks of Egypt handed Prime Minister Samaras a memorandum with their most pressing problems. In their joint memorandum, the Presidents of the Greek Communities in Cairo and Alexandria, Christos Kavalis and Yiannis Siokas respectively, reported the major problems of pensions and health care, problems in tax matters and passports, as well as problems associated with the Greek-speaking education in Egypt.
