A Cypriot aircraft disappeared yesterday from the FIR of Cyprus. Its remnants were later discovered near the Cypriot city of Larnaca.
The twin-engined Diamond DA42 crashed in the sea off Larnaca.
In his last communication with the control tower, the pilot reported that there was a problem, but one which he considered manageable, since in a second communication they stated that the problem was restored.
The two persons aboard, the pilot and a crew member were found dead this morning. The pilot, Avgoustinos Avgoustis of Cyprus, 54, and the crew-member, Jiosk Opeki, 54, a Lebanese citizen, are currently being transfered along with the aircraft parts found afloat to the port of Limassol, by two corvettes, one German and one Brazilian
The training aircraft was covering the route from Paphos to Beirut, Lebanon.
The plane was located by the ‘Spirit of Piraeus’ vessel approximately 80 kilometers (40 nautical miles) southeast of the city of Larnaca.
A search team of Cypriot, Israeli, and Lebanese armed forces, including helicopters and C-130 transports, was immediately dispatched to find the aircraft. The team scoured the area, discovering white flotsam presumably from the aircraft.
Participating in further search operations are two Cypriot CH-53 helicopters, 2 C-130 airplanes from Israel, a German Braunschweig F 260 corvette, the Brazilian Constituicao F 42 frigate and a Brazilian LYNX type helicopter.
