In a recent interview to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency, German MEP Gabi Zimmer, leader of left-wing Die Linke in European Parliament, argued that Germany must pay war reparations to Greece, for damages caused by the Nazi occupation.
Zimmer said that her party has taken initiatives in order to publicize the controversial issue. The MEP pointed out that Germany has a “moral obligation” to pay for damages and the occupation loan, and appeared confident that although the German government has not examined the issue, a fair solution will be found.
Zimmer also denied allegations that her party is not supportive towards Greece. She stressed that her party has consistently supported Greece in the German Parliament and estimated that the current aid program is counter-productive and against Greek people’s interest. She noted that the billions of euros given to Greece for its bailout end up in the banks, rather than supporting the Greek people.
Commenting on Greece’s main opposition party SYRIZA, she expressed her belief that it will come first in the next elections. The German MEP added that a SYRIZA government would have to focus on creating an alternative government plan, take initiatives and proceed with effective reforms that will end austerity and drag Greece out of recession.
