Judges Demand Their Wage Cuts Back Before The End Of 2014

Prime Minister Antonis Samaras received a letter yesterday from five judges’ unions. In it, the justices have demanded their wage cuts – amounting to some 100 million euros – to be paid back before the end of 2014.
The government’s 2012 decision to cut salaries of judges was deemed unconstitutional. In return for the pay cuts, the court ruled that the governing coalition must eventually forward the judges the wages owed to them from the period of renegotiated earnings.
Under pressure to meet the troika’s fiscal targets, the Samaras government has thus far refrained from making the payment. In their letter, the five unions representing the country’s judges have demanded that the government issue a joint ministerial decision, paving the way for the outstanding amount to be paid in two equal installments before the end of 2014.
“We ask for there to be an urgent meeting between the prime minister, the finance minister and the judges’ unions,” the letter reads.
The coalition is also under pressure to act on a court ruling ordering the restoration of wages owed to members of the armed forces and emergency services. The expected cost of such a payment would be approximately 500 million euros. The government has attempted to stall on the payments until this year’s fiscal targets are met.
