Young Scientist Commits Suicide in Crete

suicideA young, unemployed engineer from Chania, Crete, decided to end his life last week after falling into substantial financial debt.
The 31-year-old man went to a grove in the rural area of Mournia, where he used a makeshift noose to hang himself. His body was later discovered by the grove’s owner, who immediately alerted authorities about the tragic incident.
A local news broadcaster noted that, while most community members were aware of the young engineer’s depression and financial difficulties, no one believed that he would ultimately take his own life.
Before the outbreak of the financial crisisGreece had some of the lowest suicide rates in the world. Since 2008, however, deaths by suicide have increased among adults and the youth. According to the Greek Health Ministry, an increase in attempted suicides has also been recorded since 2008, as well as known use of anti-depressant medication.
