Romania edged out Greece in their opening Group F encounter thanks to a penalty kick from captain Ciprian Marica this evening.
Marica put his side ahead on ten minutes when he confidently sent Orestis Karnezis the wrong way from the spot, after Alexandru Chipciuon was tripped in the box.
However, Marica went from hero to villain as he was sent off for a second bookable offence just eight minutes into the second half.
The game, which was a repeat of last summer’s World Cup playoff, won by Greece then, was played behind closed doors as punishment for previous crowd disturbances at Greece’s fixtures.
Greece was perhaps lucky to have played in front of empty stands as the players were spared the likely embarrassment of being booed by their own fans for a sub-par performance.
