New Conflict Between Thessaloniki Metropolitan and Mayor

No 772112A new conflict has erupted between the Metropolitan of Thessaloniki Anthimos and Mayor Yiannis Boutaris. It started after the mayor’s statement that he would introduce some street name signs with Greek names together with names of foreign historic personalities who had lived in the city.
Anthimos threatened that he will ask for the help of young people, supporters of the Greek Church, to destroy the new street signs proposed by Boutaris, particularly those of Turkish personalities.
Metropolitan Anthimos said that it is unacceptable for street signs of Thessaloniki to bear the names of the Turkish invaders and conquerors. He also claimed that such a thing would be a reason for revolution.
The Metropolitan, known for his conservative ideas, once again expressed his opposition over the establishment of the Department of Islamic Studies in the School of Theology of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki while he appeared particularly pessimistic and disappointed concerning the name dispute between FYROM and Greece.
