SYRIZA Leader Meets with Cyprus President

Tsipras_Anastasiadis1Greece and Cyprus should be the pillars of regional stability and security, main opposition SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras said on Tuesday after a meeting with Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades.
“I had the opportunity to be briefed by President Anastasiades on the developments in the talks. The second round of discussions in an effort to find a just and viable solution to the Cyprus issue is concluded. I expressed to the president our strong support to the efforts of the Cyprus Republic for a substantial progress. However, I cannot hide my concern about the intransigence of the Turkish-Cypriot side and mainly the Turkish one, as there were no significant developments during the first two rounds,” Tsipras said.
“I want to point out once again that the Cyprus issue — let us not forget it — is primarily an issue of invasion and 40-year occupation of the northern part of Cyprus. Therefore, the process of the solution must be in the context of a bi-zonal, bi-communal federation, based on the resolutions of the United Nations,” he said.
“In this context, the key priority is for Greece and Cyprus to be pillars of stability and security, and at the same time to be forces that will consistently seek cooperation and peaceful settlement of disputes,” Tsipras added.
