Crete: The New Silicon Valley

The island can become a new Silicon Valley”, said Steve Vranakis, director of Google’s Creative Lab, who attended a meeting of the Academic and Research Institutions, organized by the World Council of Cretans and the Region of Crete at the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH).
The main objective set by the Region of Crete and the island’s scientific-research institutes for the period 2014-2020 is the combination of research, innovation, real economy and entrepreneurship, which will contribute to the island’s development and also create new jobs.
Replying to a question regarding the use of the internet, Vranakis said: “The right usage of the internet can serve democracy, culture and the economy. Especially young people can have access in technology, entrepreneurship and the ability to convey their ideas.”
The governor of Crete referred to the funds of the new programming period of 2014-2020 in regards to research, technology and innovation. “We can find additional resources and competitive programs, and through the cooperation of all institutions we are expecting to see better results for young people. The region of Crete will invest in knowledge, innovation and technology.”
Moreover, the representative of the World Council of Cretans, Ippokratis Beladakis, noted that Vranakis has played a significant role in Google, stressing that Crete and Greece are full of people like him and now is the time to help them shine. Finally, he added that the cooperation between the World Council of Cretans, the Region of Crete and the scientific institutions will continue.
