Man in Central Greece Dies from Stray Bullet

celebrationA baptism celebration in Karditsa, central Greece, turned to tragedy when the 35-year-old godfather from Chania, Crete, was hit in the head by a stray bullet (balothia).
Balothia is a Cretan custom according to which, during feasts, weddings and celebrations, Cretans shoot in the air and create a lot of commotion. The tragic incident took place early in the morning on Monday, July 21, but it was revealed on July 24, after the man passed away in the ICU of Larissa University Hospital.
Greek Police found dozens of shotgun and pistol shells, coming to the conclusion that the guns fired multiple times.
It is difficult to know what exactly happened that day but police said that either the victim accidentally pointed and shot at himself or he was hit by a ricochet bullet.
The man was originally moved to the hospital of Karditsa and then to the Larissa University Hospital in very critical condition. The bullet was wedged into his skull, and due to his condition, doctors were not able to remove it. The gun was found at the crime scene and is being examined by Greek Police forensics.
