Samaras-Venizelos Meeting to Ease Government Tension

samaras venizelos
In a meeting between Prime Minister Antonis Samaras and Government Vice President and PASOK leader, Evangelos Venizelos, the two men discussed pending issues. The controversial issue of the evaluation scheme for public sector employees, as the Troika of international lenders demand, was on top of the agenda.
Both men agreed that there should be stability in Greece, a change of policy and a better approach on social issues. The message of Antonis Samaras was that the government should not voice many different opinions while Evangelos Venizelos stated after the meeting that “Everything is going well, everything is under control.”
The coalition government leaders tried to examine ways of reducing tensions that have emerged, chiefly between Administrative Reform Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and PASOK MPs. The two leaders attempted to ease tension after the serious disagreements within the government in the last few days, but also to prevent any new disagreements such as the one expressed by Minister of Administrative Reform Kyriakos Mitsotakis who reacted when the plan for the evaluation of the employees in the public sector was questioned.
The disputes between Mr. Mitsotakis and PASOK members created the conditions for a major government crisis, something all government members want to avoid.
PASOK insists that parts of the evaluation system must be corrected, particularly the part that says that at least 15% of the evaluated employees in each organization should get a negative score.
PASOK MP Michalis Chrysochoidis sought to strike a conciliatory tone, noting that he did not object to plans to lay off another 6,500 public employees this year and suggested that those who leave should be those who were recruited through the back door.
Leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras claimed that the scheme was a “vehicle aimed at driving out” public sector workers who are not aligned with the two coalition parties.
